Any suggestion on which 1200/9600 packet modem is the one to get? What
would one do with 9600 baud packet at this time?
I already use a Baycom BP-1 for 1200 baud packet. I wonder what
upgrading to a dual speed packet tnc would do for me or what options I
would have with a dual speed tnc?

I am using the new Kantronics KPC-9612. It works great and is probably
the best deal on the market. I got mine from AES for $199.

Peter,
I am active with 9600, run a phone line BBS, and I'm running a serious
MOD file collection effort. I don't recall seeing an 04AT mod file, but
I'll check, or you are welcome to dial in to 404-921-8687 and check.

Subject: Compaq Portable III Computer on Packet???
To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu
Wondering if anyone has experience using an old (1988) vintage Compaq
Portable III computer on packet?
I am worried about noise generated by the gas plasma screen circuitry.
This is an estate sale. I have tried the unit and confirmed that it
works just fine. There is no manual available.
I'm assuming the computer is a 286 with maybe 2 megabytes of RAM. Can
anyone confirm this or provide more accurate information.
Finally, can anyone suggest a fair price for this unit?
Your help will be appreciated. 73 de Dave NF0R@slacc.com

I am having a problem getting Graphical Packet to work with a KPC-3.
I have changed the config.gp file to replace NONAME with my call. I
get into the program and it keeps flashing this message window:
V24 data error
PC=A1 Number of try : a number that counts up
Does anyone know of any hints to get this to work with the KPC-3?
Also, does any know where I can find an English manual? Either a
FTP site, or if someone could mail it to me, would be great.

Unix also has some "big system" features in it that make it easier to protect
yourself from wayward software. I think we've got several unix machines around
here that have close to 700 hours continuous uptime (last stop was due to an
extended power failure that extended past the UPS hold up time..) The usual
Microsoft DOS system has to be restarted several times a day...
I would recommend those with 386 class and higher machines check out OS/2. Get
to run your legacy DOS and legacy Windows stuff and have a better
operating system underneath. I suspect a lot of "mac" stuff is do-able under
OS/2 with the right combination of tools, although the extended screen trick
could be a tough one..8). (gee, buy some inexpensive monitors instead of the
1 really expensive big one for folks that need the room...).

Sorry, perhaps the context was unclear.
I'll try it this way: "There is VERY little CLOVER/AMTOR/PACTOR/GTOR
specific software available anywhere except on DOS/WINDOWS platforms."
We were not talking about word processors, terminal programs,
spread sheets, etc. Were not talking about compilers and linkers.
Were talking about software to provide communications from a boat.
Via HF radio. In some reasonable way.
Happier now?

strace on puts your trace into the F9 session.
trace <interface> <flags> [<filename>] will put your trace into the
specified filename (ex: trace ax0 111 test puts the trace for port
ax0 into filename test).

radio box:
route add default tnc1
arp publish enet.host ether radio-mycall tnc1
ethernet box
route add default enet radio.host
And wonder of wonders it works!
The key item is the arp publish statement at the radio host.
For example: wa6fwi-3 wa6fwi.ampr.org 44.16.0.141 has a radio on port 144.
no-call net.wa6fwi.ampr.org 44.16.0.205 has only ethernet.
Both boxes call the ethernet port enet.
At wa6fwi.ampr.org it reads:
ax25 mycall wa6fwi-3
route add default 144
# this is the default route for all packets
route add net.wa6fwi.ampr.org enet
# this is the route to net.wa6fwi only
arp publish net.wa6fwi.ampr.org wa6fwi-3 144
# and this tells anyone that it hears calling net.wa6fwi
# that wa6fwi-3 will handle the packets for net.wa6fwi
And at net.wa6fwi.ampr.org it has:
route add default enet wa6fwi.ampr.org
There's 4 boxes currently running on the ethernet and several radios on
one of them. One of the ethernet boxes is running SCO-Unix. All the boxes
talk to one another, and can telnet etc out to the "outside" world without
requireing anyone to have "special" routing in their own files.

: Chuck N3QAT
There are two kits, the 'C26 DSK which is based on the TMS320C26 processor
and the 'C50 DSK which is based on the TMS320C50 processor.
You could say that the 'C50 is the next generation up from the 'C26
in that it has more memory and is faster. Both are fixed point (as
opposed to floating point) processors and will do just about any
DSP trick that you want. Both chips have built-in memory.
The boards are small, approximately 2.5 X 4 inches and have the
necessary A/D and D/A chip (TLC3240).
There is an analog input and output (rca jacks) and a serial connector
(9 pin RS232). You have to supply a 9VAC plug-in-the-wall (Radio
Shack) power supply.
TI supplies a simple Assembler and a Debugger. They also throw in
a loader and a couple of sample programs. No, there is not a
'C' compiler :-)
You connect the 9VAC (notice AC) power supply, attach a cable from
the board to your serial port on your PC and then you can download
or debug programs.
There are quite a few Ham type programs for the 'C26 DSK on the
internet. 'C26 programs can be converted to 'C50 programs with
some effort.
The cost is $99.00. I am not sure what the availability is at
this time (Wyle, Marshall, etc)
If any more questions, Email me.
